I am curently using acrylics, but I had the same problem with oils?
My paintings tend to look animated, how do I get them to look more realistic?
dont know if this helps but try adding more water to your acrylic paint and practice toning.. gud luck (turps for oil paint)

The two man reasons I can think of are color tone and outlines. Color tone is effected by how you mix your paints in your pallet. Cartoon like paintings are generally start with "Strait from the Tube colors," meaning once you squeeze the paint out of the tube on your pallet, you don't tone it down by mixing it with a bit of another color (usually grey, black, it's compliment on the color wheel, brown plus many others.)
As far as outlines are concerned, you don't have to actually add black lines to create them, you can be just too severe with your color transitions (transitions are the edge between the subject and it's background.) You will generate a optical outline with too severe an edge. We usually see objects in a much more blended way. I hope this helps, but if you need more help send me a pic of one of your paintings, I can give you much more info
I hope this helps
