i gave this girl a cup and she just told me she heard it can give you cancer

You need to use food-safe glazes, but if you didn't, I think the worst you could get is lead poisoning, and you'd have to use the thing an awful lot even to get that.

No, it will not give you cancer. Potters today are required by law to not use any lead bearing glazes on functional pottery. If lead is used on a pot there must be a hole in the bottom so it can not hold any liquid.
Reply:Glazes now have what is called a "frit" used to add some of the undesierable elements, the making process of a frit makes them non toxic to use in a glaze. Anything made in Asian(China, Vietnam etc) countries I would be wary off as I and probably anyone else reading this does not know the standards used in these countries. I have seen plates for sale in Australia with stickers on them saying "not to be used with food", after pointing this out to the store owner the next week the plates were still there minus the stickers. Never use a dry glazed pot for food, the surface is not sealed and the glaze usually contains barium.
