when i try, it gets really awkward.

how should i ask my friends to take pictures with me without getting awkward?

Reply:well then you're just not a camera whore at heart. Lots of people feel better when they take picture by themselves without friends around. you should try that, then you'll get comfortable with the camera

Just tell them you want to be a camera whore with them and you want to take epic pictures. Pester them. Tell them they're lame if they say no.
