Do you consider andy warhol to have been an influential artist?

Do you consider andy warhol to have been a great artist?

i think his work was very naive. i'm no art expert but i know that copying a cambell's soup can isn't art. or doing rich people's portraits. why not homeless people's portraits or do something different. i give andy one thing he was damn good at marketing himself.now a days i think its not about what you can do but who you know. its sad because i think i am fairly talented and i hope to make it as a artist oned day. maybe even go to art college

I do find it influential.

It's very modern and original.

i don't like warhol...marketing yes, he has been influential. it seems to simplistic, but i think his main idea was money, men, ...and drugs, no?
Reply:Isn't it common for young people today to question their elders and their elders' aesthetics? This is why art, architecture, fashion, and anything else progresses in terms of style - because we are constantly questioning the inherited styles of our precursors. As you are doing in questioning Andy Warhol right now, he did likewise in 1960.

If you do one day go to art school, you will almost certainly learn of the many reasons why Andy Warhol is considered to be a tremendously influential artist in the field of Pop art. You will learn that the purpose of art is not simply to look "pretty," but that its serves a purpose in asking questions and challenging society's (often ridiculous) preconceptions; this is exactly what the Campbell's soup cans did at the time they were made in 1962. They were used as a way of questioning the predominance of the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1920's-1950's. Just because it doesn't mean something to you, doesn't mean it isn't important to someone else.

Since you claim to be fairly talented, I challenge you to use this talent as an impetus to create your own revolutionary style of art. But please, don't neglect the role that many other artists played in doing the exact same thing in decades past. Take the time to research and learn about art before writing something off as not being art, because that is a very grave accusation to make against an artist.
